Brief Description:  Fuel vent lines

Headed out to the hangar today to tackle the fuel vent lines and reassess the main fuel lines. In the end, I figured both of them out...and yes, it did involve some scrap and rework. First, I spent about an hour coming to the conclusion that I wasn't going to get the lines to bend around the lower longeron very easily. The biggest challenge came in trying to get the line aligned with the fitting and then make the longeron bend--and still make the whole thing clear the rudder cable routing. As it turns out, I was approaching the whole thing backwards.

Instead of starting at the front and working my way around, I decided to start at the aft fitting (and the most difficult bend around the longeron) and go from there. After scrapping a couple of pieces, I ended up making a template from scrap tubing to get the bend exactly right. Once I had that, I bent a length of tubing on the bench to match, and then installed the whole thing in the fuselage. With the most difficult bend done, I simply installed the clamps as I went (to hold the previous lengths in place) and bent around the structure, finally concluding with the forward fitting.

Aside from a couple of minor goofs, the process went pretty well and the second line took a fraction of the time. Still have to torque the fittings down, but pretty much done with fuel vent lines. The main fuel lines? Well, funny story there. Turns out that the plans are correct (go figure) and I have them installed incorrectly. I have an order in to Aircraft Spruce to get more 3/8" tubing and will fix this as soon as the tubing arrives. Now I know why the bends were so difficult...live and learn.
