Brief Description:  Flap construction

The last Saturday in October, sunny and 72 degrees--the perfect day for working on the RV. My goal today was to get as much of the flap installation finished as I could, so I began the day with a trip to the Yard Store, a local establishment that carries lots of used tools and other useful things. My target was a #3 drill bit and a 1/4 NFT tap so that I could fabricate the flap pushrods. I found the tap just fine, but couldn't locate a #3 drill bit, so instead of the drill bit I elected to use a .2104 reamer--so that's what I bought. $2.50 and a couple of minutes later I was on my way to the hangar.

The reamer and tap were put into service first, and after tapping the threads, I had the pushrods finished. After that, I spent about an hour working on installing the flap motor and assorted bushings, brackets, etc. The install was delayed while I fabricated a second F-766 bracket as the first one just didn't fit as well as it could.

Dan stopped by the hangar about the time I needed to put the flaps on, so I enlisted his help while I began the process of enlarging the hole in the fuselage that allows the flap mechanism to raise and lower the flaps. Although the location was pretty obvious, the actual size and shape of this hole has had me wondering for some time, but once I assembled everything, it was clear that a fairly large hole was required in order to allow the clevis fitting to go up into the fuselage when the flaps are retracted. I got the right side done and elected to wait for another day to finish the left. Almost done with the flaps!
