Brief Description:  Flap installation

The installation of the electric flaps was next on the agenda. The flaps are driven by a steel actuator that connects to a motor fixed between, and just aft of the seats. The assembly is shown on one of the more confusing drawings in the plans, so there is a lot of time spent just reading and interpreting the drawings.

Lots of small parts to fabricate, so I began by finding the appropriate angles, tubes and plates, and then set about measuring, cutting, drilling and deburring. After making the necessary parts, I then began the installation by drilling the actuator out to accept 1/4" bolts and inserted it into the fuselage.

The actuator is supported by three phenolic blocks, two of which were drilled in the initial phase of F-704 construction, so after drilling and cutting the third block, everything was put in place. The baggage tunnel cover must be removable to access the control linkage, so the cover is notched to allow easy removal. After doing this, I bolted everything in place and called it a day.
