Brief Description:  Forward fuselage

"After final preparations, rivet the gussets to the fuselage." This short sentence in the builders manual doesn't begin to do justice to the amount of work spent getting the replacement WD-602 fitted, drilled, and then eventually riveted in place with the F-695 gusset.

To start I first ground off a little of the forward edge of the WD-602 weld (per the plans) in order to make it nest into the longeron a little better. Then, with a big clamp pulling the flange tightly into the longeron, I drilled and clecoed through the longeron and bracket. Everything off, deburr, clean, touch up the bracket with paint and rivet it to the firewall. So far, so good. Then it was time to rivet the F-695 in place with the longeron and WD-602. Only when I attempted to slip a rivet in did I find that the holes were well off.

After 30 or so minutes of head scratching, tweaking, and trying everything I could think of, I put clecoes in the front five holes that attached to the firewall bracket and then started clecoing every hole on the longeron working aft. It worked. The picture attests to the fact that the gusset is now riveted in place, the edge distance is all ok, and it was very good to move on to something else. The left gusset was easy.

After fun with gussets it was back to the steps to drill the left side, deburr and prime everything, and get the support blocks fitted and drilled. Enough for one day.
