Brief Description:  Fuel tank construction

Once again, no pictures--photos can't begin to capture the essence of fuel tank sealant and my lack of enthusiasm for the process. I thought maybe I could have the tank completely sealed today, but ran into a series of "slowdowns" that finally made me quit for the night. The first was getting the capacitance fuel system completely wired and the connections sealed. Somewhere along the way I lost one of the small pieces of vinyl tubing that is used to insulate the screw from the rib. The screws attach the sensing plate to the rib in three places. Because the plate must be electrically isolated from the rest of the fuel tank, it is important to have no metal-to-metal contact...hence the vinyl tube around the screw. Well...one of them disappeared, and after half an hour of searching everywhere, it turned up on the work table right next to the tank...go figure. At one point, I had actually picked up some aquarium air line that was in the basement and thought I might use that. But then I started thinking about the fact that I had no idea how it would hold up submersed in avgas...I'm a timid homebuilder to begin with. So, no air line. Good thing the correct part reappeared.I'm constantly amazed at the little things that slow down the building process. Sometimes it seems that I spend more time organizing and looking for things than I spend actually building! Somehow, a couple of wings are starting to emerge from the chaos...Oh, one last thing about ProSeal. I think I'm now as qualified as anyone else to comment on this noxious substance, and here's what I think--there is merit to the pre-mixed tubes, and there are times you just need to mix up a little and be done. If you can afford the tubes and gun, go for it, but buy a half pint in a can for those days you just can't get by without ProSealing something...I shall miss it so!! And finally I can say with certainty that the next session will be the final sealing of the baffle...that's all I have left to do on the tank!!
