Brief Description:  Jack pad fabrication

I passed the halfway point on Phase 1 flight testing today! With flight testing comes ongoing maintenance, and my first oil change will be sometime next weekend, not something I’m necessarily looking forward to but all part of the process. As I detailed in my previous post, I will also put the aircraft down to accomplish a number of modifications, adjustments, etc., so I will take about two weeks off from flying at the end of the month and knock a bunch of stuff out.

One of the primary tasks remaining is wheel pants and gear leg fairings. Assembling these components properly requires that the aircraft is off of the gear for an extended period, so rather than going with the temporary 2 x 4 solution I used to jack the aircraft for weight and balance, I decided to make some more effective (safe) jack pads for future use. I already had the bases made from scrap lumber, so I purchased one more 6 ton bottle jack, a couple of 1 ¼” pipe caps, and some 3/8” machine bolts. After drilling the caps to accept the bolts, and grinding down the threads to allow them to fit over the jack posts, I fastened everything together. This will allow me to screw the caps into the wing tie down receptacles and then insert the jacks to lift the wings. I will use the jack pads for the wings and my chain lift on the engine mount to raise the entire aircraft off the ground to install everything. I’ll probably update the weight and balance at that time as well.

I’m hoping to have all the modifications and final finish work done sometime in the spring so I can start thinking seriously about getting the aircraft painted. Maybe then I will call this thing done…maybe.
