Brief Description:  More odds & ends

For those unfamiliar with Adel clamps, they are cushioned clamps made of spring steel…and by spring, I mean “SPRING”. They allow one to secure things like wire bundles and fluid lines in a variety of locations, and for that, they are invaluable. They also have a tendency to launch nuts and washers across the hangar when they invariably pop open during installation attempts. The primary challenge is that the bolt used to secure the clamp must be long enough to go through whatever number of Adel clamps are being used (three is my record, but I’ve seen at least four used before), and then accept a washer and nut, but not be so long as to protrude unnecessarily past the assembly. Compressing one Adel clamp isn’t terribly difficult, but once you add a second, the task becomes pretty challenging to do with one hand, while trying to get the washer and nut on. Enter the Adel clamp pliers—the brainchild of some frustrated builder no doubt. Instead of dropping 35 bucks on a pair, I made my own with pair of small Vise Grips that I had been using for the task. The first picture shows how they work…pretty cool.

I did finally get the pitch servo finished and safety wired. Although it took me another couple of attempts, the final version was acceptable. The primary challenge was that once torqued, the holes lined up in the most inconvenient way, with the flanges on the mount blocking access to one side. I finally figured out the best way to tackle it, but it was difficult to make everything as neat as I would have liked. I finished up the session by mounting the backup alternator current limiter on the firewall. B&C sends a very large current limiter base with their kit, but the one they include has no cover over the studs, and I’m trying my best to cover all of the hot leads in the engine compartment. So, I used a second Littlefuse current limiter base and installed it just above the one I used for the hot battery bus lead. Next up, installing and wiring the backup alternator.
