Brief Description:  Hot battery bus wiring

Today was devoted to finishing up the main power leads by installing a fuse block for the hot battery bus and finalizing the wiring runs. After much research and debate, I had come to the conclusion that I didn’t want any major cables, especially those capable of carrying high currents, running through the firewall without circuit protection. Rather than installing another ANL fuse holder, I found a much smaller fuse block with a bolt down fuse…complete with a cover to minimize the potential of shorting. The main consideration is that the hot battery lead is…well, hot. That is, there is no switch to turn it off, so circuit protection becomes pretty critical. I’ve settled on a 30A fuse for the task, figuring that if there was any kind of ground fault in this cable it would instantly pull a bunch of amps…the idea is that the fuse blows and I no longer have a hot battery bus. I prefer that to any other option—especially those that involve smoke and flames.

After selecting a suitable location, I did the requisite drilling, deburring and dimpling, and then riveted a couple of nut plates in place to take the #6 screws. Once that was done, I filled the backs of the terminal receptacles with RTV (to eliminate the miniscule possibility of one of them grounding to the firewall) and then screwed it in place on the firewall. Next I started the process of routing both the main and hot battery leads around the avionics sub panel, up over the avionics rack, and finally, through the firewall and down to the respective connections.

Most of what I have read suggests keeping the main power feeds separate from other wire bundles where possible, so I believe my design will meet that requirement, as well as allow for future servicing. With that, I basically declared the main power supply to be finished…until I think of something else.
