Brief Description:  Aft fuselage wiring

Today was a long session at the hangar to get started with the actual wiring. In my previous post I talked about all of the planning I’ve been doing, and while I feel like I have a pretty good basic design, I’ve found that the practical application always requires changes. One of the things that I’ve spent an inordinate amount of time considering is how to get the wiring back to the aft fuselage for the tail lights, pitch trim and the GMU 22 magnetometer. It seems that everyone has a different philosophy—some use conduit, some run it along the floor of the fuselage, and some go through the bulkheads. Additionally, do you have to separate the bundles for the lights from the magnetometer or trim to prevent interference? Some say yes, and some say no. In the end, I decided to simply make two runs. The pictures show the right side where I’ve elected to run the lighting wires; the left side is similar with the pitch trim and magnetometer wires.

Getting out the drill is always hard—as I’ve said before, you can always drill a hole, but filling it back in is a challenge, so after one more moment of contemplation, I drilled the left side for the planned wires. When I installed the bracket for the ELT, I added several nut plates to facilitate Adel clamps—hoping to use them for wiring. With that in mind, I ran the wires several inches above the rudder cables and will plan to add another clamp midway between the bulkheads to ensure that I have good support and comply with the guidance in AC 43.13. The plan at this time is to run forward to the baggage bulkhead, then down along the lower portion to turn forward and run under the baggage compartment. The plans allow for two wiring holes along the tunnel, but since my baggage floors are removable, I elected to run the wires there. More holes and snap bushings in those locations.

After doing similar drilling on the right side, and completing a couple dozen other odds and ends—pulling out the fuel pump brackets for modification, changing the plan for the brake l
