Brief Description:  Wire harness splicing

After yesterday’s debacle, I arrived at the hangar today with renewed focus, hoping to make some progress on integrating the second COM radio and GTN 625 harnesses into the original harness. The first order of business was to open up the COM 1 backshell and get it ready to take the additional sockets from the COM 2 harness. Once that was done, I started with the easy ones and soldered a socket on the green and orange wires that allow the two radios to coexist with a transmission interlock. The harnesses from Steinair all come with the pins and sockets crimped, but with only 10-15 to add/replace, the $40 or $50 it costs to by a “cheap” D-SUB crimper doesn’t seem worth it. Lots of people have soldered all of their connections, so I figure that just this couple will be ok.

The next step was to cut the CAN bus wires and splice the two from COM 2 into the harness. Unfortunately, in a somewhat hasty move, I actually spliced the wires back together with solder splices before I added the additional wires…oops. Fortunately there was enough wire to add the additional splices, and while not particularly pretty, the continuity check was good and a length of heat shrink tubing gave some additional strain relief.

I then started working the wires from the GTN 625 into the harness, which required that I start cutting the tie wraps that held the bundles together. Eventually I had a pretty big mess, so I took some time and cleaned everything up—to include adding some nylon sheathing to the COM 2 bundle. Six hours and that’s all I had to show for it?
