Brief Description:  Drilling longerons and fitting firewall

Today started with drilling...lots of drilling. I spent about an hour drilling the left side longeron up to the F-704 bulkhead, then jumped over to the right side to fit the longeron and drill it out up to the firewall. After doing the same on the left side, I measured the longerons and had to trim about 1/4 inch off of each one. To do this, I used a cut-off wheel in my rotary tool, and after clamping the longeron to a board for stability, the cuts were made without incident. At times like this you tend to realize how much time you have in the project and take things VERY slow...I can't imagine what it would feel like to cut the longeron in the wrong place!

Once the longerons were trimmed I set the firewall in place for the initial fitting. At this point I noticed that both longerons needed a little more bending, so off with the firewall, bend, firewall back on, check, repeat as necessary. Once I was happy with the fit I placed the F-772 bottom skin in place and drilled two holes, one on each side per the plans, through the skin and the firewall bracket. At this point the builder's manual calls for a break, I guess it's designed to ensure that a builder doesn't do something stupid by forging ahead with drilling the firewall without first checking that everything fits perfectly. Who would ever do something like that??

Tomorrow we drill the firewall flanges. Should be interesting to see how everything comes together.
