Brief Description:  Crotch strap installation

Today was mostly focused on getting the pilot-side crotch strap bracket installed so I could get the floors and rest of the interior back in place. The bracket kit I purchased from Van’s was essentially useless due to my placement of the control stick wiring, so I had a choice—move all of the wiring or make a new bracket. The crotch strap is primarily there to hold the lap belts down and in the proper position, so I elected to fabricate my own bracket out of some excess angle stock I had. Once that was finished and installed, I tested out the straps and everything fit, so I spent awhile getting the floors back in place.

I had also decided to clean the fuel filter while I had the interior out, and not knowing how much fuel would spill, I climbed in with some rags and a couple of wrenches to find out. Turns out that it wasn’t much, but what did leak out went everywhere…glad the carpet was out. In the future I will put a small dish under the fitting to catch the fuel. The filter itself had a fair amount of gunk in it…no metal, and no large chunks (thankfully), but quite a bit of what appeared to be accumulated lint. Although the tanks have been closed up for years and were thoroughly vacuumed out prior to closing, I’m not surprised that there was some debris that had collected over time. I’m pretty sure that from now on there won’t be much collecting in the filter, and it was good to see how much open filter area there still was—pretty sure I won’t have to deal with a clogged filter anytime.
