Brief Description:  Spinner, aft canopy skirt and latch

Today was a marathon session punctuated by a number of visits from various people I knew…and a couple I didn’t. There was a big Cessna 195 fly-in going on this weekend, so lots of people visiting the airport and with the hangar door open, it was hard to stay totally focused. I started out the morning by installing the six remaining cam locks on the lower cowl. Once that was finished, I reattached all of the canopy mounting hardware and did a little extra filing on the left forward skirt to get everything to slide a bit more smoothly.

The afternoon was focused on installing the spinner, a task that took quite awhile due to the requirement to make a prop-shaped cutout on both sides of the spinner—and to try and get them to actually follow the curve of the prop. I ended up using a contour gauge for the rough shape, transferred that to a piece of cardboard, and then after trimming, fitting and trimming some more, used a piece of scrap aluminum for a test cut. Once I was satisfied with the basic shape I transferred the cut line to the spinner and got out the Dremel. The initial cut was intentionally undersized, so I used a sanding disc to progressively open it up until it followed the contour of the prop on both sides.

The next step was to drill the spinner and both the forward and aft flanges for #8 nutplates, a process well documented elsewhere in this log. I finished up by bolting the forward flange in place and test fitting the spinner. Looks good!
