Brief Description:  First start attempt

Today was supposed to be the big day where I reported my first engine run. Instead, I got a lot of work out of the starter and a couple of backfires…that’s about it. I suspect incorrect magneto timing, but that remains to be seen.

The day started in a promising manner as the temps were cool, the rain was going to hold off until afternoon, and the airport was quiet. I pulled the aircraft out of the hangar and began the pre-oiling procedure, which involves removing the top line to the oil cooler, filling the cooler and then cranking the engine until oil is visible at the end of the detached line. By doing this with the top spark plugs removed, I was able to easily turn the prop by hand to get the oil moving and pretty soon had signs of oil at the top of the line. The next step was to reconnect everything and turn the engine with the starter, looking for at least 20 PSI. On the first attempt I got nothing, so I suspected air in the pressure line. Detaching that line and turning the prop a few times rewarded me with oil pouring out onto the firewall…oops. Cranking gave me about 40 PSI, so we were ready to go.

I put some fuel in the tanks, attached a tie down to the tail, and when Ross showed up as my fire guard, we were ready to go. Following all of the Lycoming IO-360 start procedures, I triumphantly turned the starter and nothing happened. We tried everything and couldn’t even get the engine to chug, stumble or hint of a start. Pretty frustrating. After about an hour of trying, I pulled it back in the hangar and worked on some avionics programming. At least something got done. Tom is going to come back out and troubleshoot the mags…hope that’s the problem.
