Brief Description: Misc finishing work
I started today by cleaning the lower cowling and spraying two coats of high build primer. Although I’ve had good intentions of trying out the Stewart Systems water based primer, I can’t get away from the convenience of using spray can primer for the small amount I have left to do. This time I used a different brand (Duplicolor) and found the results much more satisfactory than the brand I used on the upper cowling, so that will be what I use for the duration of my limited fiberglass priming work.
After spraying the cowling, I pulled both wing tips off and began the process of fitting the aft ribs in each. The plans call for a ¼” gap between the aileron and the trailing edge of the rib, so I had marked those lines before I removed the tips. The Dremel tool and a sanding block made quick work of the trimming, and then I finished the process by the usual aligning, drilling, countersinking, deburring, priming and riveting—all very routine at this point in the build.
During the time that the primer was drying, I did a quick circuit check on the landing light to make sure that I had that all correct before attaching the wing tip (although there is access to the landing light without removing the tip). I finished the day by adding nut plates all around the nav light cutout for attaching the lens. This turned out to be a real pain due to the fact that a slight slip with the rivet set caused some unsightly damage to the gel coat on the tip. I do have a number of other areas that will need some filling, so it isn’t a big deal to fill, but it won’t look very good until I get around to it.
