Brief Description:  Cowl fitting

This weekend was devoted to family activities, so building took a back seat. Each one of my daughters helped with riveting at some point in the project, and today was the first time that they were all at the hangar together in years. It was fun to show them the aircraft and let my granddaughters sit in it…there are just some things that are more important than building!

The next part of the building process will involve final fitting and finishing of the cowling, so while I was waiting for everyone to arrive, I spent some time working on fitting it. The most important part of the fitting is getting it correct up around the spinner, so I used that as my reference point. The builder’s manual calls for between 1/8” and 3/8” clearance from the front of the cowl to the spinner, so I decided to split the difference and used a bar clamp as my spacer. Since I had previously fit the cowling without the prop on, I knew that the spacing at the aft edge was close, but it turns out that I had to trim some additional fiberglass off of the top edge. The bottom edge was close, but the lower right corner is going to need some work—probably even adding a little bit of additional fiberglass as there is about a 3/8” gap in one area. Lots of trimming, sanding, checking and refitting left to go.
