Brief Description:  Tail light wiring and system check

After finishing up the panel work, I was very curious to know if my tail strobe installation was going to cause any noise in the headsets. In order to find out it would be necessary to get it wired and ops checked, so I started off by working on a way to ground the base to the structure—not an easy task in the limited space available in the fairing. I ended up running a piece of 20 AWG from a screw connecting the base to another #6 screw that I inserted into the fairing attach strip. No pictures of the assembly—it will be forever hidden once the fairing is riveted in place, but the continuity check was good, so I moved on to the actual wiring.

I don’t have a crimper for Molex connectors, but with the few that I actually have to install, a small pair of needle nose pliers works in a pinch. Once I get the wire stripped and the terminals bent around the bare wire and insulation, I give the insulation a quick crimp with my multipurpose crimper and insert the pins into the sockets. Once that was all finished I reinstalled the whole thing back in the base and screwed it down.

I went up to the panel, flipped the master switch on, and was rewarded with a glowing tail light. I then flipped the strobe switch and it worked! The final test was to listen in the headphones while the strobe was on, and there was silence…a good day’s work.
