Brief Description:  Tail light bracket & flight control installation

Today was a short odds & ends session. I spent about half the time working on an attach bracket for the tail strobe, but can’t finish an install until I get a couple of nut plates that I ordered from Aircraft Spruce. I used a small scrap of .050 aluminum, cut a 1” hole in the center, and then traced around the light housing to get the basic shape. I cut off the excess with the bandsaw and then carefully filed it to final shape. After I got the shape right I drilled four holes which will then be match drilled to the fairing and attached with #4 stainless screws.

When I had done everything I could on the tail strobe, I turned my attention to the flight controls—specifically the ailerons. I first worked for awhile on checking the push tube rod end bearings. These had been installed many years ago and basically neglected since. All of them needed lubrication, and a couple of them looked a bit rough, but after oiling and cleaning, I deemed them all serviceable. I then started working on installing the left aileron, a process that required a little homebuilding creativity due to the need to place washers (really spacers in this case) on the bolts as I inserted them. I ended up using a piece of scrap .032 to make a “Y” that held the washer in place from below while I inserted the bolt. After getting everything in place, I torque the nuts down and checked for proper and free movement. So far everything looks good.
