Brief Description:  GPS antenna and misc wiring

Today I set about completing two tasks—getting the G3X & GTN 625 to receive a GPS signal, and sorting out the issues with the stuck mic on the radio. The GTN GPS signal failure was what I had suspected…when installing the TNC connector on the backshell, I had failed to get the pin inserted far enough. No connection to the unit. That was a fairly simple (and $22 for a new TNC connector) matter of climbing back under the panel and doing delicate cutting, stripping, attaching and crimping work in the cramped confines of that space. Once that was done I attached two BNC connectors to the #1 GDU and GPS antenna and pulled the airplane out on the ramp. The G3X found a signal almost immediately, but the GTN simply showed “No GPS Signal”. I wondered if the open hangar door and the location of the antenna were causing a signal blockage, so I pulled the airplane clear of the hangar door, almost to the taxiway edge and there it was. Now to make the GTN talk to the G3X…but that is just a matter of some simple programming.

The radio issue turned out to be more of a challenge. After isolating each radio and troubleshooting each one, I believe I may have done some damage to the GMA 240 audio panel when I had the connectors reversed. That may turn out to be a costly mistake if I fried an internal circuit. I have an e-mail in to the Garmin team to see what my next steps might be.

With nothing else to do on the avionics, I went back under the panel to tidy up the wiring that I had to move when I was working on the audio panel and GTN signal issues. I had to use some cable standoffs to keep everything separated, and honestly think it looks a little messy, but I can pretty much guarantee that I am the only one who will ever know…
