Brief Description:  Audio panel & antenna installation

Today was one of those days where a past mistake could have been very costly, but in the end the only thing I lost was an hour of time and a little skin off of one knuckle…I was lucky. In the process of fixing my mistake I also learned that every avionics connector is accessible in a pinch since I’ve now removed the GTN 625 connector and BOTH GMA 240 connectors. It all started when I installed the audio panel backshell “for good” just prior to riveting the top skin on. The panel has two connectors, cleverly named J1 and J2, and as I think back to the installation, rather than verifying which was which, I used the wire bundles for identification since they seemed to fit better in one particular orientation…which happened to be backwards.

When nothing happened upon initial power application to the audio panel, I began troubleshooting and realized my mistake. With no other options available, I climbed under the panel and began the process of removing the connectors and swapping sides. The lack of access made things a bit more difficult, but I got it done. I do have a “Pilot Mic Stuck” message on the PFD, so I will start troubleshooting that, but otherwise, with the exception of only having one radio displayed everything looks normal.

After working on the audio panel, I continued installing BNC connectors on RG 400 leads, installing the transponder and COM 1 antennas, and the pilot’s side mic and headphone connections. I also made a trip back home to download the current G3X software since I had a couple of issues with the GDUs communicating. The update was simple and fixed the problem. Shortly before I left for the day, I tuned the COM 1 radio to the 1K1 AWOS and even though the hangar door was closed, I crossed my fingers and turned the volume up…and there it was! Another big day in the progress department.
