Brief Description:  Main power & panel wiring

Today I continued the process of wiring the main power distribution system. Last week I spent a little time attaching a couple of diodes to the battery and start relays, but realized that I was going to have to move the bus bar joining the two relays. I decided that before reattaching everything, it might be good to test the relays. The start relay checked out fine, but the battery relay—the “crossroad” of the entire electrical system—was failed. I suppose I’m glad to know that now, rather than at first power up, but still.

Moving on, I focused on wiring the diode that prevents current from flowing from the essential bus back to the main bus during operations on battery power. The plans drawing shows a “jumper” from two terminal posts on the diode going to the main power bus, with a single wire coming from a third post and continuing on to the essential bus. Because I did not have anything to suitably join the two wires coming from the diode, I elected to go with an electrical equivalent of running parallel wires, each on a separate fuse, to their respective terminal posts.

Finally, I pulled the panel out of the fuselage and clamped it on the workbench to facilitate the installation of switches and circuit breakers. That process was fairly time consuming as each component must be installed individually…and there are about 40 different ones. I’m already seeing a need to change up some of the switch and indicator locations, so there will be a lot of adjustments in the near future. Off to order a battery relay…
