Brief Description:  Odds & Ends

As I mentioned in a previous post, this is the part of the project where things have to be permanently attached in order to deconflict all of the wires and hoses that run forward of the fire wall. I started the day with the realization that there are about 10 rivets along the bottom center of the fuselage that needed to be riveted at some point. The challenge (there’s always at least one) is that the engine mount runs across that area, only about ¾” above the bottom. This means that there is no way of getting a bucking bar or standard rivet set on them. What to do? There is no way I’m taking the engine off now, so I got busy thinking about solutions. I got about three of them set using my pneumatic squeezer and a no-hole yoke, but the yoke has too deep of a throat to work in the close confines where the nose gear weldment is, so using a rare burst of ingenuity, I made my own no-hole yoke with a piece of scrap steel taped to my standard yoke. I still have to drop the exhaust—again—in order to get to four of the rivets, but at least I have a pathway to completion.

With that task at least partially finished, I set about working on cleaning up a few items that had been fitted but never fully installed. The oil cooler had to be removed, two AN fittings attached and properly clocked, then reinstalled with the oil lines in place. The throttle body came off and I removed the red cube, fixed a cut in the heat shrink (no idea how it got there, but there was a small nick in the insulation on one wire as well), reattached it and then put the fuel lines on. I found the throttle body gasket and using some Permatex gasket maker, reinstalled the throttle body and torqued the bolts (as best I could, access to that area is a bear…).

Finally, I reinstalled the manifold pressure line and alternate air source cable using a little bit more secure attachments. So far, so good. We’ll see what adventure awaits next.
