Brief Description:  ELT installation

ELT installation was pretty simple. I had ordered a bracket from Van’s that mounts on the left side of the fuselage, just aft of the baggage bulkhead. The bracket was originally designed to support either an ELT or a strobe power supply, but with the advent of LEDs for strobes, I doubt there are many using it for strobe power units. It does come pre-drilled with what seems like a hundred holes, and as is typical for me, not a single one was usable.

I decided to mount the ELT low on the bracket and use three of the extra holes for nut plates. I’m sure I’ll be able to find something to use the extra attach points for, so it seemed like a reasonable use of the existing holes. As is often the case, the Van’s bracket was designed to be installed much earlier in the build process—at a time when I’m sure no one is thinking about installing an ELT bracket, so there are four holes on the bottom that are supposed to be drilled into the stringer…but there is no physical way to get a drill there…none. I finally modified the design to go straight into the stringer, rather than up from the bottom, and since I had the requisite edge distance, am quite confident that it will be just fine.

A bunch of nut plates later and I used some blind rivets to install the bracket into the fuselage. Antenna and wiring will be later.
