Brief Description:  Forward fuselage

Not much to show for four hours of work. After I spent some time studying the plans for the avionics and sorting out the wire runs, it was time to start attaching more things permanently to the fuselage. The panel attaches to various brackets every couple of inches around the perimeter with #8 screws—and all require nutplates. Most of the nutplates were installed much earlier in the build sequence, but in hindsight, I should have waited to attach the nutplates on a couple until the brackets were riveted to the fuselage—it turns out the nutplates interfere with the rivet set and it’s not possible to rivet them with those installed. I ended up drilling the nutplates off, riveting the brackets, and then reattaching the nutplates.

Then I started trying to figure out how I was going to attach the subpanel to the fuselage. The challenge comes from the location of six rivet holes—almost impossible to get a bucking bar or a rivet set on either side due to interference with a vertical structural member. After setting a couple of so/so rivets, I elected to try a couple of Cherrymax rivets…with less than perfect results. It was at this point that I made the decision to remove as much of the interior assemblies as necessary to gain access to the space. When I finally rivet the top skins on, I will need all of these assemblies (rudder pedals, fuel vents, etc) out of the way, so might as well get started now.

Going backwards in order to move forward seems to be a trend…but now with clear access to all of the necessary locations, I think my progress can continue without hindrance. We’ll see…
