Brief Description:  Engine baffles and odds & ends

Today was a session devoted to working on a couple of different firewall forward projects. I’ve been trying to figure out how I was going to deal with some of the more visible aluminum parts that won’t receive paint, and it seemed that polishing was a good way to remove scratches and provide a nice finish. Earlier in the week I purchased a basic aluminum polishing kit from Harbor Freight, along with some 1000, 1500, 2000 and 3000 grit sandpaper from O’Reilly’s. I decided to practice on a piece of scrap before I worked on anything important, and the first picture shows the results. It’s hard to tell from the photo, but there are still some minor scratches visible, so I’ll have to work on my technique. All-in-all, I was pleased with the results.

After my polishing practice, I fitted the modified fuel lines from TS Flightlines. I realized that I lacked the necessary fittings to complete the job, so Aircraft Spruce got a little more of my money. I also ordered a couple more firewall pass-through fittings for the mixture and prop cables.

Finally, I turned back to the baffles and worked on the openings that receive the ignition cables. The cables pass through two nylon fittings that snap together and are bolted onto the aft portion of each baffle. A Unibit and some filing made the work pretty simple.
