Brief Description:  Engine baffles

When I left the hangar yesterday, I was hoping to finish up the fabrication and fitting of baffles so I could start working on the air induction system. In order to get the baffles finished, I had to fabricate three clips out of angle stock and drill them to the baffles. As it turned out, two of the clips had to be remade due to fabricator error…that killed about 30 minutes of my limited time. Once that was done, I finally turned to the air induction system and started translating the less than ideal plans. It was then that my suspicions were confirmed…I had done quite a bit that was now going to be essentially undone.

It turns out that a favorite comment by Ross…”but first”…was applicable here. In this case, it went something like this: “The IO-360 air induction snorkel should be fitted after all of the engine baffles are fitted…with the exception of part 2S (for the record, I still have no idea where that reference comes from), and that part SHOULD NOT be trimmed until fitting the snorkel.” In other words, fit everything—to include all of the bending, drilling cutting, etc…BUT FIRST, make sure you don’t follow the plans for the left inlet…and, part 2S is the left inlet ramp.

The snorkel is fitted by centering it on a 2 3/8” diameter piece of ¾” plywood—something that took an extra 30 minutes to make—and then rotating it until it aligns with the inlet ramp. Then, after clamping it in place, the builder traces around the backside (totally inaccessible when installed on the engine) and marks the screw holes by shining a light from behind. Then, taking out a suitable cutting device, the snorkel is trimmed to fit, drilled to accommodate the bolts…and reinstalled. You had to be there…

In the end, I had to enlarge all of the holes in order to get everything lined up (no worries, I will backfill with resin before final installation), but was able to get the opening in the ramp cut before I had to leave for the day. The baffles and induction system are still not done…but getting closer.
