Brief Description:  Fuel line

Another cold day in Kansas, and the last chance I had to get some work in on the RV-7A project in 2014. I had been putting off fitting the fuel line that runs from the firewall to the engine driven fuel pump simply because it involved cutting another hole in the firewall…and due to the fact that the plans had some conflicting guidance on where this line should be attached. I finally decided to tackle it today.

The challenges started way back when I was assembling the firewall. The plans call for a doubler to be installed, complete with nut plates, for a boost pump that apparently is no longer used. Not knowing this, I dutifully followed the plans and installed the doubler. For the last few years, I have wondered what I was going to attach there, and when I installed the engine mount, I found that one of the nut plates interfered with the installation. Odd…so I ended up drilling it out and left the doubler in place.

Cut to today and another round of plans study. The plans call for the fuel line doubler to be attached in exactly the same place as the starter solenoid…not going to work. So…I decided that if the fuel line was long enough, I would use the already installed doubler plate as my fuel line penetration point. It was, and I did. After drilling a 9/16” hole, I faced the challenge of working around three rivets. I tried a couple of solutions, but in the end, I fabricated a steel washer to go on the firewall side, and used an aluminum spacer on the cockpit side to make everything fit.

The picture shows both the fuel line installation and the throttle cable firewall penetration. I’m pleased with both and can now move on to cutting the last two holes in the firewall…ok, there will be one more for the alternate air source cable…
