Brief Description:  Throttle, prop & mixture brackets

It was a cold day in Kansas with light snow and wind-chill in the single digits. I wasn’t sure if it would be a good day to be at the hangar, but with the holiday break ongoing at work, things are relatively slow and I can’t afford to lose any available time. It turns out that keeping the heat on at the hangar overnight, and with the addition of my propane heater (nickname “the afterburner”), it was really very comfortable.

Today’s task was installing the forward and aft control brackets for the throttle, prop & mixture. The aft bracket is the one visible in the cockpit and is where the controls attach. This will eventually be painted to match the panel and has some amount of visual impact, so I elected to round the corners a bit to give it a more finished look. I’ve seen some pretty fancy iterations of this panel, but in my case, I think simple will be just fine.

The forward bracket mounts below the sub panel and gives support to the aft portion of each cable housing. Simple Adel clamps attach to nut plates installed in the flange, so those took the most time to fabricate. I’ll wait to rivet that panel in place until the sub panel goes in for good…which won’t be long now.

I fussed with the throttle firewall pass-through a little more, but still am not completely happy with the fit. The primary challenge is that even after drilling out to ¼”, the cable is still pinched between the halves of the sphere and the assembly has a gap in it. I think I will probably need to drill the sphere out to 5/16” to make the cable fit, and then I will wrap the cable with a bit of firesleeve tape to get everything tight.
