Brief Description:  Misc engine work

A day off from work provided an opportunity to head out to the hangar for a couple of hours. My primary goal was to add washers under the bolt heads on the top two engine bolts in order to get the cotter pin in the correct position. The right hand bolt posed no problems—in fact it just slipped right out and right back in. The left hand bolt was a different story. As soon as the bolt came out, the mount pulled to the center by about 1/8”…or, I suppose the engine moved outwards…who knows…the point being that I now had to go back to engine mount basic training and figure out how to get that last bolt back in.

Since I had attached the engine lift prior to starting this process (can’t be too careful, even if there is never more than one bolt out at a time) I used it to raise and lower the engine to see if I could manage a fit. Nope. I ended up going back to the technique we used when originally mounting the engine; which was to use jack on a sawhorse to raise the left side just a bit. Then, by pulling the engine-side rubber pad out just a bit, I was able to line the holes up enough to get the bolt started. A few taps with a hammer and it slid in far enough to get the nut on.

Following all of that, I attached the manifold pressure fitting to the primer port on the #3 cylinder, and then put the throttle body on to test the fit and get an idea of how everything goes together in that area. There are brackets that hold the throttle and mixture cables in place, so I’ll probably work on those next.
