Brief Description:  Cowl fitting

After getting both the top and bottom cowls on and the initial fit done, I then began the laborious process of trimming various places in order to get the best possible fit. This involved a significant amount of cowl off/cowl on activity, and none of that is worth repeating here, but suffice it to say I’m glad I’m not building a fiberglass aircraft. There are a number of spots that will require some amount of filling to get everything perfect, but overall, I had decent success in getting things lined up.

Once that was done, the next step was to cut and fit the bottom and side attach strips for the MilSpec fasteners. This particular drill was about as boring as the cowl fitting exercises mentioned above, but went generally like this: measure, mark, cut, file, trim, clamp, drill and deburr. When complete, I had two attach strips for the bottom and two for the sides. The belt sander that made the journey through the snow came in very handy today.

The final part of this activity was measuring and drilling the cowl to the attach strips which will ultimately give me a reference point for installing the MilSpec fasteners. The pictures show the result. Finally, I snapped a picture from the nose on…not perfect, but pretty good for a start.
