Brief Description:  Cowl fitting

I slipped out to the hangar today to try and get a couple of hours in before life closed back in around me. With some major household projects behind me and some travel ahead, this was the only day I could manage to get some work done.

During the previous session I had marked the opening for the oil filler access. With a metal cutting disc in the Dremel, it only took about five minutes to cut out. A bit of sanding to get everything even and remove the rough edges, and then back to the aircraft for fitting.

As I've mentioned in other posts, the cowling is one of those confounding parts of the aircraft building process, in that it is only two large pieces of fiberglass that must fit precisely along the entire aft side, as well as along both edges. No matter what the physics books say, for every action there is not always an equal, but opposite, reaction. In some cases the reaction to fitting one side is a very unequal reaction on the other side. I finally decided that unlike aluminum, I can always build the fiberglass up in the uneven areas, and got the drill out.

After about an hour of drilling, fitting, drilling, checking, etc, I had the top cowl on to my satisfaction. I left the project musing about how I will actually start fitting the lower cowling, but I see duct tape in my future...
