Brief Description:  AD-06-02-23 compliance

Yesterday the left wing went on the workbench to get ready for removing the fuel pickup access panel to safety wire the nut in place. As I mentioned in a previous post, this AD had been accomplished during construction of the right wing, but I had finished the left before the AD was issued. ProSeal in hand (very convenient to have Seal Pak here in town), I started the process with a small heat gun and a sharpened putty knife. The process was actually pretty easy for the first 30 minutes, but since I inherently avoid disassembling things if I don't have to, it slowed down after that. In hindsight, I should have taken the tank off to permit 360 deg access with the putty knife, but why make things any easier than necessary?

I ended up using a long piece of steel that I sharpened to work through the layers of ProSeal and fuel gasket and finally with a satisfying "clunk" it came off. I removed all of the old sealer and gasket and then cleaned everything up with MEK.

The actual safety wiring only took about 20 minutes--the hardest part was drilling the hole in the nut. Once that was done, it was mix up the sealer, fit the gasket, and put the whole thing back together. Done.
