Brief Description:  Brake installation

This was one of those less productive and more frustrating days at the hangar. With the engine shipping in a couple of weeks, I've been turning my attention to finishing those items that will help me get ready to install it. One of those is to install the wheels and brakes on the main gear. Today was devoted to figuring out the brake installation.

It started ok with a quick inventory, and then on to figuring out how the pile of parts on the table translated into the assembly on the axle. First, I fabricated the six spacers required to hold the fairing attach bracket in place at the correct distance. Next, run a strip of fine emory cloth around the axle to remove just a little bit to allow the attach bracket to fit. Then I ran a 5/16" drill through the hole in each axle and slid the brackets in place. First challenge, attaching the four bolts that hold the Matco brake bracket to the Van's bracket. Lesson learned...do this step off the axle and slide the whole thing on after they are attached.

Once that was done, I realized that the brake caliper would not fit correctly due to some interference with the fairing bracket. Out with the Dremel and do some trimming...again, much better done off the axle...figured out after trying it by sitting on the floor hunched over. I still don't have it perfect, but it's close. Finally, I realized that I had no idea how the brake calipers actually attach to the brackets...no clue. Finding out that Matco doesn't speak "Van's" and I'm going to need a translator.
