Brief Description:  Firewall and misc fuselage

Today I headed out to the hangar intent on getting the firewall recess riveted in place. I started by finishing up some edge filing and after the normal fitting and adjusting, riveted it all together. There is something about having that closed up that makes it seem much more finished. I gave some brief thought to hanging the engine mount, but after looking at the 3/8” bolts and realizing that I didn’t have a suitable reamer, I decided to wait. I haven’t gotten too wound up about using a reamer to get every hole perfect, but those that attach the wings, tail & engine do get a little more consideration. I’ll buy a used reamer at the local junk store and use that for the six holes I need to drill.

Firewall done, I started some serious plans research to figure out which way to go next. I had considered attaching the hinges used for the cowling, but after looking at it a little bit more, I decided to turn my attention to the canopy frame. Building a sliding canopy is a pretty involved process that requires some of the side rail and forward structure to be drilled to accept bolts for attaching the roll bar and other parts. Due to the possibility of drilling in the wrong place, I spent a lot of time walking between the plans and the aircraft to get an idea of the layout. Measuring and marking were about all I got done—no interest in drilling until I can be sure it’s all correct.

During the process of installing the foreward fuselage ribs I realized that I had never dimpled the 10 or so holes in the upper part of the firewall. So, how do you get a dimple die in place to do this? The picture shows my plan...and it actually worked. Go figure.
