Brief Description:  Brake line installation

This afternoon was devoted to finishing up the brake line installation, and, with the exception of the lines running from the fuselage to the brakes, the task is complete. The hardest part of this job was actually something I didn’t expect to be difficult—fabricating the flexible lines that slave the brakes together and connect them to the master cylinder. The biggest challenge turned out to be the relative difficulty I had getting the brass ferrules over the tubing once I had placed the brass inserts inside.

No amount of coaxing, lubricating, heating, etc, worked. I had actually come out to the hangar a couple of weeks ago and tried to finish this job…leaving in frustration and blaming the cold hangar for my problem. Not so easy today when it was much warmer and I still couldn’t make it work. I finally was able to use a combination of WD-40, heat, and gentle persuasion to get the job done. We’ll see if it leaks under pressure…hope not.

Once I had the lines fabricated, I broke out the Sharpie and a ruler and measured for the master cylinder attach points. With a little Boelube and the air drill to get through the firewall and bracket, and the master cylinder was ready for bolting in place. A couple of quick attachments and the brake system was plumbed.
