Brief Description:  Fitting wings

Tonight I went out to the hangar to check on the new lights and to see what I was up against on Saturday when I plan to drill the holes in the aft spar. I was pleasantly surprised by both--the lights are fantastic and the wings are almost perfect in sweep. Good news so far.

Checking for sweep involves a number of steps. First, you must check for proper triangulation by measuring from a common point on the aft fuselage to a common point on each wing. This measurement was within 1/32"...close enough for me. Next you hang plumb bobs from four points on the wings and measure sweep from outboard to inboard--with about 1/2" to play with. From what I can tell, the most important thing is that both wings are the same.

I used my new laser level to check the sweep and found that both wings had about 3/16" from outboard to inboard...ok by me. Just to be sure, I used a line strung between the wing tips and this showed about the same sweep. From this, I decided that my wings were ok in the sweep category and will next check for proper incidence.

Since I wasn't planning on drilling the aft spar tonight, I went ahead and marked and drilled the lower fuselage skins to the wings and then had Ross help me put the flaps on to check for fit. The right flap was just about right, but the left flap required some filing to keep it from rubbing on the fuselage skin. All for tonight, ready to check incidence and drill the aft spar during the next session.
