Brief Description:  Shaping Capstrip

I finally received my capstrip today, so I was able to get on with shaping a few pieces. Rather than set up some elaborate steam system, I chose to construct the cap strip soaker from the Tony Bingelis article “Making Wood Wing Ribs” – Sport Aviation – 2/94. Once that was constructed, all I needed to do was boil a pot of water and pour it in, which I was able to do in the kitchen since it was a small and quick project. I built two forms from 2x6s that will accommodate 3 strips each, so I was able to soak 6 strips total in the first batch. I wasn’t sure how long to soak 1/4” x 1/2" strip, but I left these in for at least 20 minutes and they seemed to bend just fine. Once they were clamped to the form I placed them out of the way to dry for at least 24 hours. I think I will cut several notches in the forms with the band saw prior to the next run, which should ensure that the strips (especially the center) dry thoroughly.
