Brief Description:  Engine Search

I've actually spent a considerable amount of time researching engines. I've decided on using a Corvair so I've been scouring the local ads, Craigslist, Ebay, etc. and asking the guys at the airport for several months. I don't really need the engine right away, but I wouldn't turn down a good core if it presents itself.

Tyler and I were driving back from Red Castle yesterday when we saw a Corvair sitting inside a fenced area with a bunch of other vehicles... like a salvage lot. There was a number, so I wrote it down and called. The fellow was a salvage operator and he said he would take $500 for the whole car. I'm not really interested in the whole car (a 1966 Monza), but I asked if I could come out and look at it... he said sure. Tyler and I drove back out and had a look. He opened the hood and there was a complete engine... shrouds, intake, carb, air cleaner and a spare tire with knobbies still on it. It looked to be untouched, which was a good start. With my 3/4" wrench in hand I asked, "can I turn it over?" He said "sure"... it turned fine with little effort. The final test... I reached down and rubbed the serial number clean.... XXXX RH... without leading on that I had just found a suitable candidate, I wiped off my wrench and thought to myself... excellent Smithers.

I asked him once again if he would consider parting it out, but he said no. He wants $500 for the whole car, but I think I'll call him in a week or so and offer $350 and go from there. There are many good parts on this particular car. In fact, it is probably a good project overall, but all I really want is the engine, so if I get it, I'll probably part out what I can to recover some expense. Who knows... maybe I'll end up with a free engine when it's all said and done.
