On a cold February evening, shortly after snow started to fall, Stephanie, Tyler and myself set out on our way to San Marcos, TX. Radar indicated that the precipitation should remain light, and most of it was blowing off the roadway, so we were able to boogie on down the road at normal speeds. In just a few hours we were heading into Texas, but as we crossed the state line, we noticed that everyone was crawling along in the opposing lanes. We asked ourselves, “Why is everyone driving so slow?” I tapped the brakes and immediately found out… BLACK ICE! We crawled our way to Dallas driving 20mph or so. What would normally be a 4.5 hour drive took us 9, most of which was from the Texas state line. We were originally planning to drive straight through to San Marcos, but decided that we’d had enough at 3am, so we stopped to get a room (the last one available) at the Hilton Garden Inn in Lancaster, just south of Dallas.
