Brief Description:  Continued Cowling Prep

Now that I have digested the Cowling section of the Builder’s Manual, cowling work continues. Both cooling air inlets were cut out then sanded with a one-inch diameter sanding drum. Cut lines for the cowling aft sides were established. The initial cuts were about 1/8” short of the line. The fit was checked against the fuselage, and the line on the left side modified slightly.

The second cut was much closer to the line, then sanded smooth, and remounted to the plane. The fit is getting close, so the upper cowling was set in position for a gut check. The gut check revealed that the cowling was slightly low relative to the 13” prop hub fixture.

The three clecos were removed and the cowling was centered on the fixture vertically. New cleco holes were drilled through the fixture and the front cowling flange. The rear of the cowling was rechecked, and there is additional trimming required all around.
