Brief Description:  Flap System Installation & Aileron Joiner Adjustme

After removing additional powder coating from the flap adjusters so they could be telescoped further into the flap handle shaft, the assembly was just short enough that it could be installed through both fuselage mounting holes. The two triangle bearings were bolted to the fuselage. The adjusting screws and nuts were inserted and adjusted to set the arms parallel to each other, 1.00” in this case.

With the aileron joiners in place on both the fuselage and wings, it was time to reinsert the wings and see how these bits of magic worked out. Didn’t work! I found two problems. First, the four grade 8 bolts on the ends of the mixer stuck out too far. To correct this, the bolts were removed and the threads were cut about 1/8” further up the shank. While I had the bolts out I decided to grind the lettering off the bolt heads. These letters extend about 0.010" above the head surface and would eventually imprint into the opposite softer aluminum joiner surface. After grinding them off, the surfaces were polished smooth.

After reinstalling the bolts, the second issue was addressed. While installing the aileron controls into the wing, the wing was upside-down. So naturally, I installed the joiner axle bolt upside down, causing an interference with the axle bolt for the fuselage joiner. After correcting this, the wing slid into position just as designed.

With the control stick and ailerons locked in their neutral positions, the joiner bolts were adjusted until they were close enough to the mating joiner to trap a thin piece of paper. This initial adjustment works, but further refinement will be necessary before flying.
