Brief Description:  Complete Empanage Mounting Preparation

Spent a couple of hours correcting an error I discovered after I took the photos of yesterday’s work. Somehow, after the everything was aligned and before or during the match drilling of the vertical stabilizer spar to the horizontal stabilizer front spar, the vertical stabilizer ended up 1/32” to the left of the alignment line on the horizontal stabilizer front spar.

This probably would not be a problem, but it would always be rattling around in the back of my mind if I didn’t take time to fix it while everything was exposed. So, I moved it to the correct position, redrilled the four mounting holes up to 15/64” in 1/64” increments, and then reamed them to 0.250”. The holes cleaned up completely, and the larger ¼” bolts will possibly increase the G-load rating of the vertical stabilizer by a smidge.

The horizontal stabilizer rear spar and its mounting brackets were updrilled and reamed to size then secured with temporary fasteners.

The horizontal stabilizer rear spar mount brackets were updrilled, reamed, and fastened to the rear fuselage with temporary fasteners.

The horizontal stabilizer front spar mount brackets were updrilled, reamed, and fastened to the rear fuselage with temporary fasteners.

The horizontal stabilizer and vertical stabilizer were remounted to the fuselage.
