Brief Description:  Horizontal Stabilizer Mounting to the Fuselage

The horizontal stabilizer was clamped to both the forward and aft mounts, and the forward mounts were adjusted to be inboard of the fuselage sides by about 1/16”. The front spar stiffener was adjusted to be flush with the top of the forward mounts. The centerline of both spars was aligned with the centerline of the aft deck. The distance between the front of the fuselage and the outermost H.S. spar rivet on both sides was checked and found to be within 1/64” of each other, then everything was locked in position and checked multiple times.

The forward H.S. mounts were then match drilled through the aft deck, upper longerons and bulkhead reinforcement angles, and clecoed in place. All dimensions and alignments were checked again, then the H.S. was carefully leveled to match the forward fuselage. Everything was locked down again, then the forward spars were match drilled to the vertical legs of the forward mounting angles, and clecoed in place. Everything was again checked for correct position, level, and squareness with the fuselage, and found to be in excellent condition.

The rear H.S. spar will be attached to the rear mounts after I receive and answer to a question to SPA clarifying the vertical alignment of the rear spar. I expect this answer tomorrow morning. SPA promises a personal response to questions “usually within 24 hours,” and in the past they have always been true to their word.
