Brief Description:  Assembly of the Aft Fuselage

In the last few days, countersinking of the longerons was completed, the lower aft skin was cleaned up and dimpled, and all the components making up the baggage compartment, and the rear end of the aft fuselage, were primed with 7220 self etching primer.

After some investigation and navel gazing, I have decided to finish the surfaces of the baggage compartment below the upper longeron with a light weight carpeting or car trunk liner. This will yield two benefits. First, the carpeting will protect against any abrasive action by whatever ends up in the compartment, and secondly, it will dampen some of the noise inherent with aluminum aircraft. Above the upper longeron, the baggage area will be painted with Rust-Oleum “Hammered” paint. This paint complements the powder coat finish on the forward fuselage structure, and hides minor imperfections. Since this paint is only in the top of the baggage area, abrasion will not be a factor, and the curved turtle deck surface generates less noise than the flat lower surfaces simply because it is geometrically stiffened. This finishing strategy may be carried into the forward fuselage, but is still under review.

The final assembly of the aft fuselage is officially underway. The tail wheel spring mounting brackets were permanently riveted to bulkhead #4 and bolted the lower longerons. Before mounting the side and upper skins, one more effort will be made to insure the bulkhead and former flanges are well aligned to minimize local aberrations when the skin is riveted in place.
