Brief Description:  Static Port Protection

A couple of days ago, I pulled a static port tube into the center of the left wing, with the open end protruding about ¾” through a central rib. As I thought about this, I became concerned that since the wing is not fully sealed (aileron push tube for instance,) that there was a risk of a bug taking residence in the static tube, nullifying its function. This can and does happen with standard fuselage mounted static ports also, but in this case I can’t look at it during preflight unless I crawl under the wing and remove the inspection panel.

So, I found a small fuel filter, about ¾” in diameter, about 1” long, with a ¼” opening in one end. After testing it to insure that it easily passed air, I applied adhesive around the open end and slid it over the exposed static tube end, gluing it to the rib surface.

An annual inspection should be sufficient, and it can be removed by twisting it to break the adhesive, then easily replaced.
