Brief Description:  Wing Guide Adjustment

Today the focus was on adjusting the wing spar guides so the spar pins could be easily inserted and removed. I do not have SPA’s spar pins yet, so I fabricated temporary pins from ½” diameter, 6-inch long, grade 8 bolts from Ace Hardware. The bolt heads were turned off on my lathe, and the threaded end removed. Short pieces of 1/2” steel tube were TIG welded on the ends for handles.

As the BM says, aligning the spar guides is an iterative process requiring several passes at adjusting the four points. Each adjustment iteration gets you closer to the target, but each of the four adjusting points affects the others slightly.

A technique that proved helpful was to insert a pin to the left spar until it just starts to stiffen up, then leave the handle in a horizontal position. Adjust the related guide until the handle drops. This is an indication that you are adjusting in the correct direction. If the handle doesn’t loosen within a couple of turns, you are probably going in the wrong direction. Once the handle drops, push it in again until it starts to stiffen up and leave the handle horizontal. Repeat this process until the pin moves easily into the spar. Follow the same process with the other pin for the same spar. After both pins move easily into the left spar, repeat the process with the right spar. Several iterations of this process proved very effective.

I began checking the wing incidence angles, but need to make a better fixture for the level. Something to do tomorrow.
