Brief Description:  Spar Prep for Wing Assembly

While waiting for the wing kit to arrive, I decided to read ahead in the assembly manual, and prepare the spars for assembly into the wings. The spar caps are to be marked at the centerline of the rivet holes for ribs #2, #8, and #14, to enable alignment with the rear spars.

To find the centerline, a hole locater was made by drilling a 1/8” hole through a small wood block, and leaving the drill bit in the block protruding from both side of the block. This hole must be drilled with a drill press to insure the hole is perpendicular to the block.

Insert the business end of the drill bit into one of the rib mounting holes, with the block setting flat on the spar web. Then align a quick square against one of the spar caps and slide it against the protruding drill bit shank, then mark both the top and bottom spar cap edges. Move the square to the other side of the drill shank and mark the top and bottom spar cap edges. Using the square again, mark a line centered between to two previous lines, across the upper and lower spar cap surfaces (see image 3.) This process was repeated for all three specified rib locations on both spars.
