Brief Description:  Fuel Tank Fixturing

While waiting for the remainder of the kit to arrive, I decided it was a good opportunity to build the fixturing required to support the fuel tanks during their construction.

The pattern was down loaded from the SPA website onto a thumb-drive then printed full scale at Office Max. A 2’ X 4’ X ¾” thick piece of MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) was purchased from Builder’s Square and cut into four pieces 12” X 24”. Two pieces of the MDF were stacked and carefully aligned with each other, then attached to each other with screws in each corner. The paper patterns were cut from the full scale drawings and glued to the top MDF piece with 3M “77” spray adhesive, then the pattern was cut on the bandsaw. The interior of the cut was then lightly sanded to remove any high spots, the screws removed, and a 34” long 2” X 4” was screwed between the pair.

You don’t really need two fixtures, but I like to build identical assemblies at the same time for a consistent process.
