Brief Description:  Engine Component Additions

The focus today was on engine assembly. The safety shaft threads were cleaned then the shaft was installed to be certain that it bottomed correctly against its shoulder. The shaft was then removed and Loctite 620 was applied to both threads. The shaft was then screwed in until it bottomed on its shoulder.

A bracket to secure the upper end of the dipstick tube was fabricated and painted. The dipstick tube was cut to clear the top of the oil pickup by about 3/8”, and the dipstick was cut to clear the oil pickup by 1/8”. The dipstick tube was coated with Ultra Grey RTV where it is inserted into the crankcase, then seated into the case and locked in position with the bracket while the RTV cures.

The I.D. of the oil seal for the harmonic balancer was coated with lithium grease, and the ½” retaining bolt threads were coated with silver anti-seize lubricant. The balancer keyway was aligned with the key on the crankshaft and the balancer was started on the shaft. The bolt and the large cupped washer was inserted and tightened until the oil slinger on the crankshaft was tight against its seat.
