Brief Description:  Curing the Engine Paint

After the Engine paint has cured for 48 hours, it is time to heat the engine assembly to 200 degrees for one hour to toughen up the paint and increase its chemical resistance.

My experimental aircraft building neighbor loaned me the wood crate that his Rotax engine was shipped in, to serve as a temporary oven. The four sides of the crate were set on a stainless steel topped table. Two 1500 watt space heaters were placed inside, with the back of the heaters exposed to fresh air. The plywood top was mounted on the crate, a meat thermometer was mounted through the top, and the heaters plugged in. The two heaters struggled to reach 200 degrees, but they got there. The heaters were unplugged briefly every few minutes to be sure that 200 degrees was not exceeded.

After the prescribed hour at 200 degrees was achieved, the heaters were unplugged, and the engine was allowed to cool down slowly by keeping the crate closed for about two hours.
